[horns and sirens] >> hamas military tans celebrating claiming they changed the game by avoiding an israeli invasion of gaza. israelis say they won by ending the hamas rocket attacks and weakening the militant group. each side is also mourning tonight in gaza city a funeral for a man killed in israeli air strike just before the cease-fire took effect. and the israeli military reporting a soldier died today after a rocket attack that also happened before the cease-fire. the second israeli soldier killed in the conflict. conor powell joins us live in jerusalem. connor

israel. it's a surreal experience and war is inevitable. the armored personnel carriers along the israel-gaza border before a possible ground operation and the egyptian prime minister went into gaza today to try and organize some kind of cease fire. that certainly has not worked, at least so far. israeli air strikes continue now for a third day pounding away. at not only militants themselves but their weapon storage facilities and missile launching centers, killing about 20 people. a number of those have been children inside israel. three people died when a missile struck their house. the missile defense system has done an amazing job intercepting more than 1,000 rockets heading towards population areas but it's far from perfect and that is when the three people died. there is a number of people living in fear for their lives and he had 10 seconds to figure out how to go into the bombshell and that is a pipe from the homemade rockets made there in gaza and that is that was red-hot. >>> palestinian militants target jerusalem today. israel rime minister benjamin benjamin netanya

mind about the prospect of a war in the middle east as israel and palestinian militants get closer to the brink this weekend. israel expanding its air assault against hamas and palestinian militants continuing to fire rockets into civilian areas of southern israel. that's where i want to begin this morning. i've got nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell and "new york times" columnist tom friedman. who better to have to discuss this. tom, as the two sides get closer to the brink, based on your experience and reporting, where is this going? >> let's just go around the horn, david, quickly. i think hamas is trying to use this moment to both break out of the blockade and try to end targeted killing of its leaders from israel, and trying to take advantage of the new arab spring balance of power, the muslim brotherhood in egypt, to leverage that possibility. israel. israel has been watching for the last six to nine months hamas bringing in longer and longer range missiles from iran. i think they saw this as an opportunity of necessity to take those out, missiles that
